These classroom-ready teaching materials for award-winning films feature women who make history from all over the world.

These film-based lesson plans  offer powerful opportunities to introduce students to women from around the world who are leaders, heroes, and pioneers in their fields. The lessons are designed to work with compelling films about women — plus many lessons work well on their own or with just short scenes from the films. 

These classroom-ready lessons include discussion questions, classroom activities, extension activities, additional resources, handouts, worksheets, and more. Pick and choose what you want to use.

  • And So It Begins (documentary) follows a quirky people’s movement  that rises to defend the nation against deepening threats to truth and democracy during Leni Robredo's campaign for president during the 2022 Philippine election. This learning guide includes a Journalist Profile of Maria Ressa, an investigative reporter and Nobel Prize winner known for her courage and work on disinformation and fake news.  Available in English and Spanish.

This guide features a letter by Gabby Giffords and a timeline of her life. It also explores her career as a U.S. Congressional Representative and her resilience and recovery from gun violence.   • He Named Me Malala tells the inspiring true story of Malala Yousafzai, who survived an assassination attempt as an outspoken teenage advocate for girls' education and went on to win the Nobel Prize. The He Named Me Malala Discussion Guide  explores Malala Yousafzai’s life and work, girls’ education globally, the Malala Fund and more.   • Her War, Her Story: World War II  explores the variety of women's experiences in the war and features firsthand accounts from a cross section of women from the United States, England, France, and Germany.. The discussion guide includes sections on U.S. Women Recruited for the War Effort, How Identity Shaped Women’s Wartime Experiences, Code Breakers. and What Happened to Women After the War. This film is useful for teaching with primary sources bout Women's History, and it pairs well with Breaking Enigma  (available through our World War II History Collection).
